A filling is used to restore the health of a tooth. The active decay is removed from the tooth and a filling is placed by the dentist to prevent the bacteria from spreading to other parts of the tooth.
A filling is either done using a white composite or amalgam filling. Our Brampton Dentist normally suggests white composite fillings that can be just as durable as amalgam and offers better aesthetics. However, he may also suggest an amalgam or silver filling for deep decay or children.
A filling is needed to prevent the cavity from worsening. If active decay is left untreated, it will get worse, and can lead to a root canal and/or removal of the tooth. It is important to treat decay in a timely manner.
Xrays are prescribed by the Dentist to see cavities between the teeth and to check for any infections of the tooth. The Dentist also performs an oral exam. This is how a dentist diagnoses an oral condition. At our Brampton Dental Office, education is important and we pride ourselves in spending time with our patients. Once the Dentist diagnoses the condition of your tooth, the Dentist or Dental Hygienist will then educate you, using your x-rays on the area of decay or use the mirror to show you the decay. It is important to be aware of what is happening in your mouth and to prevent future decay from happening again.
Firstly, the Dentist will provide you with topical anesthetic or local anesthetic to prevent you from feeling any discomfort during the procedure. The Brampton Dentist then removes the decay from the tooth. He then places, a white composite filling or amalgam filling to seal the tooth. Please remember that cavities can happen again, hence it is important to keep up on your brushing and flossing to prevent new or reoccurring decay.
The Brampton Dentist will let you know your treatment plan and, if you have any questions or would like to learn more about your specific case he will gladly speak to you.
