Inlays and Onlays help protect and strengthen teeth that have had some decay.
Braydon Dental Care is able to both inlays and onlays and after examining your teeth recommend which one will fit your needs the best.
Inlays can be used when there is only a small amount of tooth structure that needs to be restored due to decay.
An inlay fits inside the tooth like a filling does; when there is too much structural loss of a tooth then a filling is used.
Traditionally, inlays were gold now they are made out of porcelain or resin material that can be matched to the colour of the tooth.
Inlays are bonded to the tooth which helps strengthen the tooth.
Onlays, like inlays, fit inside the tooth but also wrap over the tooth’s chewing surface.
These can be made of ceramic or resin as well and matched to the colour of the tooth.
Bonded to the tooth like inlays, they help seal and strengthen the tooth to reduce further damage.
Are you a candidate for inlays or onlays?
If you want to know if you are a candidate for inlays or onlays it is best to talk to your prosthodontist.
He or she will determine which one will best suit your needs and which material is the best choice for you.
First, you will be given a local anesthetic near the roots of the tooth that needs to be restored.
Second, any old filling or decay will be removed and any build up that needs to be done will be done.
Third, a mold of the area will be made so that the inlay or onlay can be custom made.
Once it comes back, the inlay or onlay will be cemented with dental cement to the tooth.
